Daniel Dion died this morning, just
a day after his family revealed that they believed he had just hours to live.
He was in hospital in Celine's
native Montreal and surrounded by his family, including 88-year-old mother
Therese.
'Céline is still in Vegas with her kids making plans for [her husband's] funeral,' a source told People following the difficult loss.
'It's a typical grieving process. There’s a moment of shed
tears, moments of memories and laughter.'
His funeral will take place at
St-Simon-et-Jude de Charlemagne Church in Repentigny, Quebec, CBC reported.
'His last days were in the wonderful
care of the doctors and personnel at Maison Adhémar-Dion, a palliative care
center in Terrebonne Québec,' Daniel's obituary read.
'For those wishing to
send flowers, a donation to that organization would be very much appreciated.'
It also read: 'Battling cancer for a
few years, it's in the uttermost discretion and surrounded by his family that
Daniel Dion, 59, died today, January 16.
He was the eighth child of Thérèse and
Adhémar Dion, brother of Céline.'
On Friday, Celine's sister Claudette
had told the Journal Of Montreal: 'It's
very painful. It's a matter of days or hours.
It looks a lot like René, he had
cancer of the throat, tongue and brain. Our family is very experienced.'
'We are with Daniel, day and night.
He is 59 years old, very young to be the end of life.'
Celine, 47, is the youngest of 14
children.
The My Heart Will Go On singer's rep
confirmed the sad news about her brother's illness to Entertainment Tonight.
René was 73 when he passed away on Thursday, just two days before his 74th birthday and one month after the couple's 21st wedding anniversary.
Grieving Celine promptly cancelled
her January 16 and January 17 performances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace,
where she is currently taking part in a residency.
The star will resume performances on
February 23, but she announced on Facebook on Friday that she will host a
celebration of his life at the Las Vegas Colosseum on February 3.
René was Celine's manager before they got together. They first met when she was 12 and he was 38, and began dating seven years later.
Angélil's funeral will take place on
January 23 at Notre-Dame Basilica in his hometown of Montreal - the same
cathedral where the couple wed in 1994. A public viewing will be held the day
before.
A post on Celine's Facebook post
read: 'According to his final wishes, his funeral will be held at Notre-Dame
Basilica in Montreal, where 21 years ago, he chose to marry the one who will
remain as the great love of his life, the artist for which he had the most
respect, the woman who gave him light and happiness until his very last
breath.'
