See: Nigerian-Born Doctor Charged With Manslaughter Spared Jail

The Nigerian-born doctor, Hadiza Bawa-Garba, who was charged with manslaughter in the UK over the death of a 6-year-old patient, Jack Adcock, has been spared jail because she has to look after her autistic son.

 

6-year-old Adcock (pictured right) had Down’s syndrome . He died after suffering cardiac arrest and was undergoing resuscitation when Dr. Bawa Garba mistaken him for another patient who had been discharged, and gave ‘do not resuscitate order’ to the nurses.

The Kaduna-born doctor was consequently charged with manslaughter through gross negligence alongside two nurses, Theresa Taylor and Isabel Amaro, who equally worked at the Leicester Royal Infirmary Hospital where the incident happened on 18 February 2011.

Bawa-Garba was last month found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter but was spared jail so that she could care for her own disabled child.

Handing down the judgements, Mr. Justice Nicol said Bawa-Garba’s mistake had been ‘extraordinary’ and that neither of the medics had given Jack the priority he deserved.

But he added that the incident was a ‘tragedy’ and that neither had neglected the young boy out of ‘selfish reasons’.

Bawa-Garba was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence by a majority verdict of 10-2, and was also ordered to pay £25,000 in prosecution costs.

Before the verdict, the General Medical Council suspended her from medical practice and there are strong indication that the council will now ban her from practice.
